But, has Kitchen Design evolved with these expanded needs? The serious Home Chef has different priorities than the typical home cook, from heavy-duty appliances to countertop space and more. In this panel talk along with Chef Jonathan Kinney of Northwest Culinary Academy and Catherine Maxwell of Midland Appliance, we’re going to explore some of the particular design aspects of a true ‘Chef’s Kitchen’.

    The Depth of Light by ThinkL Studio

      Speaker: Sebastien Panouille, ThinkL Studio

      Lighting is one of the 7 design elements, however it is not well known or considered. Lighting is also one of the largest energy uses in commercial buildings. Code are evolving to reduce lighting energy consumption and yet most project lighting scheme are design to meet code without necessary the occupant in mind. Lighting is a dynamic design layer that need to be better understand and utilized. This session has been designed to create interest and awareness around lighting on projects.

        Robin Rosebrugh, the Architecture & Design Manager at Steelcase in Vancouver, BC, will lead a presentation on the future of workplace design and hybrid models becoming more prominent in workplace design post-pandemic.

        The rate of change is an accelerating force. A force that sped up during the pandemic. During this talk we will dive into the many ways that work, workers and workplace are continuing to evolve in response to the rapid rate of change we are experiencing.

        Reimagined Outdoor Kitchen Design

          Speaker: Ryan Bloom, Urban Bonfire

          We are witnessing one of the greatest shifts in consumer behaviour as it relates to our homes and the way we spend time in them, from the worldwide move to urbanity, the rise in home cooking and “staycations,” to the search for products with unique retail experiences and compelling storytelling. Outdoor spaces, which were once an afterthought, have now become an essential component of our homes. It is where we unwind after a long day, entertain, cook and connect with family and friends. Where there was once a disconnect between indoors and outdoors, design professionals now find themselves in a unique position to bridge this gap and create the solutions and experiences their clients are seeking in their outdoor spaces. Hear from Urban Bonfire’s Co-Founder and President, Ryan Bloom, as he elaborates on how the design community can leverage this emerging industry to make their mark on outdoor spaces and grow their business in return. Ryan will elaborate on the technical, functional and regional considerations when designing outdoor kitchens.

            Digital Twinning: The Digital Art of the Future

              Speaker: Dr Melanie Robinson, Ryder Architecture and BIM Academy

              Join Dr Melanie Robinson as she uncovers digital twin technology, its place in the building information modelling (BIM) environment and why digital twinning is the art of the future. A digital twin is digital replica of a physical built asset, created using real world data to produce simulations that can predict how an object or process will perform. It can be integrated with the internet of things, artificial intelligence and software analytics for example, to enhance its output.

              With the advancement of machine learning and factors such as big data, these virtual replicas have become incredibly valuable for BIM delivery in modern construction and engineering processes to drive innovation and improve performance. This is a genius new art form that is transforming the way we design, build and operate the building stock of today and that of tomorrow.

                  Whether you are a tradesperson, designer or homeowner we will introduce you to the internationally recognized methodology to design thermally efficient building.

                  Drawing from our own architectural practice and the firm’s passive design work, and most importantly our own certified passive house, this seminar with introduce the foundations and theories behind passive design and why it is the world’s leading green accreditation system. Passive design principles can be applied to any commercial, residential or industrial building- from a modest home to the tallest skyscraper.

                  The seminar will cover everything from design principles, construction knowledge to lived experience, with a follow up Q and A to address participants’ individual specific questions.
